Susan Rosen is a yoga instructor and breast cancer survivor. She was born and raised in California and received her degree from San Diego State University. Susan has been studying Iyengar yoga since 1989 because of debilitating pain in her shoulders. Within a few years she was able to regain her strength and flexibility, and her pain had vanished. Susan has been teaching Iyengar style yoga privately for the past fifteen years, and has been teaching at Positive Choice, Kaiser Permanente in San Diego for the past seven years. She received her yoga training from the BKS Iyengar Yoga Centers of San Diego, and is a Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance. Susan was invited to teach a Restorative Yoga workshop for cancer survivors in August 2007 at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, NY.
During her recovery from surgery and chemotherapy, she would practice a series of restorative and breathing exercises that were given to her by her teachers and specifically tailored for anyone going through the trauma of breast surgery. These restorative poses shortened the time of her recovery and gave her a feeling of peace and well-being, compared to other women who were going through the same surgery and did not do yoga. Upon speaking to other cancer survivors she found that the lack of rehab programs for breast cancer survivors was quite common.
Susan then decided to make an instructional video for breast cancer survivors that specifically focused on the upper body. She included the gentle poses that she had practiced after surgery. The video was brought to fruition by intuition and faith, because Susan knew that there were thousands of women out there suffering who would benefit from the gentle healing that yoga has to offer.
